I have been in my new position as councilor of ward 1 for a little over a year now and thus far it has been an incredible experience. I am very proud to be representing a community that is full of people who are legitimately concerned about the well being of Ward 1. I receive phone calls every day with ideas and concerns that are intended to improve the well-being of those who live in this beautiful area. I especially appreciate the “Thank You’s”. When a constituent will make time to pick up the phone, or drop by my office to say that they were happy about one of my decisions, it means a lot to me. So, thank you in return. I don’t think I had realized how many people devote their Tuesday nights to watching the council meetings. Some nights we run very late, but many stick it out and follow right to the end. I appreciate the devotion and all of the comments received after the meeting. It is this input that lets me know what the area needs.
This year’s budget was a grueling task. I fought for efficiencies and made many motions to cut costs unfortunately I did not have enough council support on many of them. My opinion is that everyone at Norfolk County needs to take a look at where savings can be found. These savings could come from paper and pens to staffing to selecting the right contractors and service providers. Many residents can’t afford any more increases to their tax bills.
One of my most recent disappointments was a motion I put forward to receive an Overtime and Absenteeism report. Absenteeism is one of the most costly aspects of running a business if not kept under control. This creates huge costs related to overtime and scheduling issues. According to a Conference Board of Canada Briefing by Sun Life Financial, the total cost of absenteeism in Canada was $16.6 billion in 2012. In my opinion it is our job as councilors and staff to ensure that we are looking at all aspects of cost cutting and efficiencies for the Corporation of Norfolk County. Unfortunately, my motion was voted down 5-4.
Over the coming year we will see a number of improvements in our area and some of these are long overdue. Port Rowan Harbour will be receiving upgrades and added buoys, additional land and water signage and an electrical upgrade. Erie Blvd will be resurfaced. The Port Rowan Community Centre parking lot will be resurfaced. The St. Williams Fire Hall and Community Centre will receive some updates. The fences at the St. Williams ball diamond will be repaired. There will be updates to the South Walsingham transfer station as well.
I look forward to sitting down with more constituents look forward to hearing many more great ideas. I would like to remind everyone that they need to voice their opinions and share information with councilors as it helps make informed decisions.
As we head into spring I can’t wait to see all of our farmers hard at work prepping fields and preparing to start another great year. This past year we have seen a number of farms add on site processing and start new ventures that will make Norfolk County even better by bringing jobs and strengthening our economy.
